Frequency

Frequency is a physical quantity that indicates the number of repetitions (oscillations, cycles) of some periodic event per unit of time. It is a basic parameter characterizing periodic processes, such as oscillations, waves and various types of periodic movements.

Frequency is measured in hertz (Hz), where one hertz represents one repetition per second. For example, a frequency of 1 Hz means that an event (for example, string vibration, sound fluctuation) repeats once per second.

For musical instruments and sounds, the kilohertz (kHz) or megahertz (MHz) unit is often used because the frequencies of sound waves can be very high. Television broadcasting, radio waves, microwave ovens and many other technologies operate with frequencies in the multi-megahertz or even gigahertz range.

A decrease or increase in frequency can have different effects on waves, sounds, and generally any periodic process. Changing the frequency, for example, affects the tone in music, the color characteristics of light, the speed of signals in electronics, and other physical phenomena.
